25 Reported instances of nuclear explosive materials being lost or stolen in the past 20 years

100,000 Number of bombs that can be built with the amount of highly enriched uranium, or HEU, today

100 Pounds of HEU that can fit in a shoebox

Data from a presentation by O’Neil Hamilton of the Caribbean Community, or CARICOM, during the Next Generation Nuclear Security Summit in Washington in April 2010. Caribbean leaders are worried about the transit of vessels carrying highly toxic and nuclear waste in local waters that could be targets of terrorist attacks, Hamilton said. CARICOM has called for ces- sation of these practices and the education of the public on the dangers of nuclear proliferation. The goal is to have a nuclear-free zone, as stated in 1967’s Treaty of Tlatelolco signed by all countries in the region.
