Costa Rica Fights Illicit Traffic

Costa Rica developed its first border police unit early in 2011. The squad of 153 police officers combats illicit traffic that includes drugs, people, currency and weapons, according to the news agency EFE. The officers received training in rural policing, weapons handling, first aid, satellite tracking, cartography, combat patrol and explosives, among other areas. Costa Rica’s investment in training and equipping its border force reached an estimated $1 million.
